As you know, there have been quite a few hail storms here recently. One question we often get asked is, “What size hail actually damages a roof?”
There is no one specific answer to that question. Hail ranges from pea size all the way up to softball size, or as large as it can grow. Some of the recent hail storms had hail up to baseball size, and all the way down to pea size. And size isn’t the only factor. If you have hail the size of baseballs but it’s fairly soft, it won’t do a lot of damage. On the other hand, quarter-sized hail that is really hard and dense can certainly damage your roof!
What’s The Condition of Your Roof?
Another variable is the condition of your roof. The older your roof, the more susceptible it is to hail damage. The newer your roof, the more resilient it is.
How To Know For Sure If You Have Damage
Either way, the best thing to do after a hail storm is to have your roof inspected. That way you’ll know exactly what the condition is. Another way you can get an idea of whether or not you might have hail damage is to walk around your property and look at your soft metals. This includes your gutters and the vents on your roof. If you see any dings in those metals, you definitely should get your roof inspected!
